Rob Dhanu, K.C. is a highly respected criminal defence lawyer whose career has been shaped by deep experience on both sides of the justice system. He began his legal career as a Federal Crown prosecutor with the Department of Justice in Vancouver, where he was entrusted with complex and high-stakes prosecutions. During this time, Rob developed extensive expertise in Charter litigation, search and seizure law, drug trafficking and firearms offences as well as organized crime matters. That experience allows him to analyze criminal cases with a rare depth of insight, understanding not only how they are defended, but how they are built from the prosecution’s perspective.

Working within the justice system ultimately compelled Rob to change course. While he believed deeply in the rule of law, he was drawn to criminal defence by a desire to protect individuals from the overwhelming power of the state. Rob found greater purpose in standing beside clients at their most vulnerable moments, listening without judgment, and advocating fiercely for their rights. Over time, his practice evolved into something more than defence alone. Rob became committed to understanding the root causes that led clients into the criminal justice system and helping them address those underlying issues so they could leave the process in a stronger position than when they entered it.

Rob is widely recognized as a thought leader on criminal justice issues. He has presented for organizations including the Canadian Senate, the International Commission of Jurists, the Justice Institute, the Canadian Bar Association, the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia, Continuing Legal Education BC, the South Asian Bar Association of BC, and Legal Aid BC. His presentations have addressed topics such as Gladue reports, human rights in prisons, systemic discrimination within the justice system, domestic violence, and youth gang involvement in the South Asian community. He has also volunteered significant time as an instructor for the RCMP search warrant training program at the Pacific Region Training Centre in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

In addition to his legal work, Rob is a frequent commentator on criminal justice issues for Global News, CBC, CKNW, and print media outlets across Canada. He is deeply committed to mentorship and has guided many associates, students, and members of the criminal defence bar throughout his career, believing that strong advocacy depends on both skill and integrity being passed forward.

Outside the courtroom, Rob brings the same discipline and curiosity to life that he brings to his practice. He enjoys running half marathons and marathons, motorcycle touring, history, travel, international affairs, and politics. These interests reflect a lifelong commitment to perspective, endurance, and understanding the broader forces that shape both people and institutions.
